As the construction landscape evolves, post frame buildings are emerging as a popular choice for their durability, efficiency, and versatility. For those looking to construct agricultural, commercial, or residential buildings, post frames offer numerous advantages. This educational blog is designed to guide potential builders through the ins and outs of post frame construction. And what to expect when you are planning and designing your building.

What is Post Frame Construction?

Post frame construction is a method of building that uses large square or rectangular posts, commonly treated lumber, laminated columns and engineered roof trusses to create a structurally sound building. These posts are set in ground below the frost line. They can be also embedded in precast concrete piers or specially designed wood-to-concrete steel brackets.  The metal exterior is fastened directly to the framing of the building. The interior can be finished any way the customer wants.

Advantages of Post Frame Buildings

  • Cost-Effectiveness

Post frame is generally less expensive than a regular stick frame build. Posts are typically spaced 8-12 ft apart, which saves on material, as well less time is spent framing and this means labour costs are lower.

  • Energy Efficiency

The large post spacing and wall thickness allows for more insulation thereby minimizing heat loss compared to stud framed walls.

  • Speed of Construction

Post frame buildings do not require a basement foundation. These buildings can be placed on a slab or the floor can be poured after posts are in ground which makes for faster construction. Trusses come prebuilt and are put in place after the exterior walls are stood.

  • Flexibility in Design

Depending on the application of the project this method of construction allows for the blending of several styles and uses. Exteriors can be customized with doors for equipment or overhangs. Interiors can be finished in metal to allow for a shop or commercial space, while adjacent areas can be a fully complete home interior living space.

Planning Your Post Frame Project

Planning a post frame project isn’t unlike planning for other new home or shop construction. The costs are lower and construction quicker, but you’ll have to go through the same steps and decisions.

  • Initial Consultation:

Here we will sit down with you and discuss some of your goals for your new building. We will determine your needs and what you want out of the new build. Some things to think about:

    • What will be the building’s primary purpose? (Agricultural, Commercial, Residential, Equestrian or a Mixture of any of these)
    • Consider things such as the flow of animals, people or machinery.
    • How and where do you want your building placed on your property? How will this affect the flow of your work on the property?
    • Think about down the road. Are you planning on adding more to the building or developing different areas of your land.
  • Design and Customization:

Once your initial goals are ironed out we get to work on designing and customizing. We take into consideration the materials such as slab foundation or engineer flooring systems. We can add features such as varying roof slopes, overhangs, overhead doors, porches, living spaces, stables and mezzanines.

We offer exterior finishing options such as masonry or rough cut lumber.

  • Construction and Completion:

Once the build is scheduled we order your material.  We keep a clear line of communication open with you during the entire build process. We will advise you on what to expect during construction. We help you acquire the appropriate permits from the municipality or county. Once the building is completed we do a walk through with you to ensure it meets your expectations.
